JAZZ

Commercial  dance to fleur east's  "favourite thing" .
Our first jazz lesson back we did....
1) Arm co-ordinations. The task was to be able to do an arm co-ordination sequence with whilst walking  on both sides ( right and left). At first it was tricky because i was trying process everything at once but then we broke it down to arms first using the left side, slowing it down and then walking and then fasting it up. once we felt comfortable doing that we did the same on the other side. Which obviously was difficult but we had eventually found it easier.
2) Kicks in the centre
3) Outward pirouettes and  Inward pirouettes .I think my I'm stronger at spinning and on my right side and struggle more on the left side especially inwards.
4) Hitch Kicks
5) Pas de bouree turning. This is one of the moves that i struggle the most with, because i find it easiest to go to the right but everything that comes after is hard for me.
Second  Jazz lesson

In today's lesson we worked on a contemporary dance to Billie Elish' s "Bury a friend".

SINGING LESSON
In our singing lessons we worked on;

My fair lady - Anything Goes

Wizards of Oz (1939)- Somewhere over the rainbow

Little shop of horrors - Da Doo ( three part harmony)

Here's a video of my learning my harmony.

The Curious incident of the dog in the night-time.
The Curious incident is a play based on a book about a boy named Christopher and his perspective of the events that accrued in his life. Christopher suffers from mild autism, loves maths, has a pet rat, lives with his father and believes his mother is dead (but isn't 100% sure how).
The story is strangely narrated because its narrated mainly by Siobhan his support teacher but they seem to have conversation with each other through out so its hard to tell if she's real or not. It's as if it's a diary entry.

The story starts of with the murder of his neighbour's dog and is accused and is taken to the police. But after his father explains the the situation the police no longer are of use and Christopher decides to investigate by him self. Yet is also shut down by his father by Christopher continues any ways because he believes he has a strong lead a suspects it being his neighbours boyfriend .Through out the investigation he discovers things he hadn't known and secrets are revealed like who the actual killer is.

What impressed me the most was how it was presented. The set was a simple as a cubed grid. There were a couple of plain white boxes laid on the side and that was it. The only props we saw were his toys, paper, bags and cups. The rest was present by the use of sound, movement, lights and imagination. Example we never actually saw his bed we just saw two people hold him up or TVs and fishing bowls were just the boxes changing colour and the sound effect playing.

Technology really brought this play to live from the drawing on the wall the high lighted dead dog outline to the sound effects it all played well and made us viewers really appreciate the time that goes in.
This was really effective because it allowed us to explore our imagination intensely. This type of theatre is called frantic assembly.

The clothes seem modern and simple however I found out that each actor that plays Christopher choose their own shoes as long as they are blue. Though for the second half everyone except Christopher and his father was wearing dull and dark coloured clothes which really set a tone in the room. This effect just showed how the same everyone looked and that the main focus was just his family.

Lastly the casting was so good. Through out the show I had realised that Christopher hadn't once left the stage except for the end. Everyone else has more than on role except Christopher, His father, Mother and Siobhan.

  MUSICAL THEATRE

Adams family

Our jazz teacher told us that our new musical was going to be The Adams Family Musical - "when your an Adams" however we realised that the 2nd years would be of use in this project the main dancing was made for the (summoned family members) ensemble.
In this dance the challenge was just keeping in character the whole time but it was the charters we make for our selves.

Because our roles were more created by our imagination i didn't feel I needed to much research however I did watch a previous performance of this song on YouTube to see the standard we had to reach.

In the morning our task was to spend time thinking of a new musical to pitch to the class. In this video we explain our idea.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

Little Shop of Horrors by postersdepeliculas

News, M., Movies, 2., Trailers, M., Reviews, M. and News, T. (2019). Little Shop of Horrors. [online] MovieWeb. Available at: https://movieweb.com/movie/little-shop-of-horrors/ [Accessed 20 Jun. 2019].

Little shop of horrors is about a poor boy named Seymour who works in a flower shop and is also in love with Audrey his co- worker. He is also treated really badly by his boss, Mr Mushnik.
One day he encounters " A strange and interesting plant" that brings him all his fortunes in exchange for blood.
We were first introduced to this project in our singing class. We hadn't yet had our roles assigned so we all sang the parts in the "prologue" which we sang first". Then In project workshop we sat down and choose our roles which was a new change in my experience of receiving roles because this time it was our chance to see deduct what suits us best. I choose the role of one of the "Doo Wop Girls", "Crystal". We was also told that we were going perform the first four scenes to the end of " grow for me".

The other role I was given was to be in the 'design and set' team which means I responsible for setting the scenes for the first four. I have confidence in this team as I have a long term experience in art and feel comfortable with creativity. I already have had ideas for the production like boxes, that say "to skid row" as if it was delivered to "skid row" which where every scene is set.

The last role i was given was to choreograph in partners a routine a song in the musical. The song I chosen to choreograph was "Skid Row". Which was going to be challenge since it's the longest song and mainly myself since my partner is absent a lot.

21&22/1/19

When creating the plan out of my choreography it was easier to understand in my head but as I was trying to explain it to everyone it started to sound confusing and I realised how hard it is to consider all every move, characters and audience perspectives.

In this plan out I used his symbols to symbolise each character and where they go.

Other things I did was highlight my lines and stage actions that i took into consideration. I also draw little figurines next to the lines and current words that i thought would impact the choreography.

I did research but I didn’t take that research into my choreography because required less dance and more characterisation which is probably why It was challenging for me because I had considered everyone’s character which distracted me from mine.

However, this worked to my advantage because it meant that I knew what everyone had to be doing and that I knew where to put the spot light I wanted.

I think the biggest challenge showing people their parts. I had focus on teaching characters individually whilst  thinking of what everyone else is doing , whilst thinking of the speed of the song.

Here is the first video of our rehearsal ....

This first video as you can see was a huge challenge because not only did I have to remember my moves but I had to remember everyone else and the moves of the people absent and make sure everyone was clear all by my self.

As you can see in this video not all characters were in so it was difficult to place people the right places and show them the right actions.

                 Prologue ( intro)

In these two videos the class being taught the intro choreography by the two girls; Tilia (Shiffon) and Leah (Ronnette). My opinion was that it was unclear and it seemed as if the choreographers them selves were confused.

                                                                       DA DOO

The first choreography for this song wasn't hard to learn except it was undecided what were going to do because both choreographers we debating on the theme of the choreography. weather it was going to be really energetic or simple movements.
                                  Grow for me

This was one of the clearer and easier choreography to learn. It was very simple and and shorter than my song so it had less movements.

Today class we did a group research discussion on B-Movies. We learnt that ..

A typical  B movie has;

-Melodramatic
-Unbelievable story-lines
-Cheaply made
-Horror/ Sci-Fi elements
-Bad/ wooden acting
-Cartoon-style trailer

King Kong Trailer:
-Dramatic music
-Fake looking set/props
-Typical comic book/ cartoon style font
-Game show style voice speaking the voice over
-Stereotypical woman screaming

Posters:
-Catchy tagline
-Comic/ cartoon design
-Giant things like plants, spiders, apes which terrorise people
-Often has an underlying sexual theme (i.e half naked woman/ damsel in distress)

2. What characteristics of a typical B movie does the 1960 Little Shop of Horrors trailer have?
-Dramatic voice over
-Dramatic music
-Comic style font
-Wooden or over the top acting
-Woman screaming/ fainting melodramatically
-Sexualised woman
-Cheaply made/ unrealistic plant

3. What characteristics of a typical B movie does the 1986 trailer of Little Shop of Horrors have?
-Dramatic voice over
-Dramatic music
-Comic style font
-Wooden and over the top acting
-Sexualised woman

Acting
For our first acting lesson back we ran through the whole script without singing. This lesson was really effective as we realised that we NEEDED to work on it example our energy was really low and our characterisation needed some work. To help this we played a game of hot seat, where we interviewed each other in our characters.
My character was crystal, but one of my issues was that the "Doo wop" don't really have a back story so we had to make it up on the the spot.

04/03 project workshop

We just went it twice, second time filming in so that we could watch it back and get feedback from each other.

feedback from Alexandra

In the costume room we found a couple of dresses but we decided to settle on three green dresses that all looked different however on of the girls decided that she didn't like it and wanted one bet fitted. I wasn't to picky on what to wear.

05/03/19

our fist rehearsal in the theatre we realised that the space was bigger than expected and our set were very little . So we decided to make more props such as tissue papered flowers.

The secound time we rehearsed in the theatre we made sure our spacing was right and our set worked the work on some lighting and sounds.

This the main colour of the shop and stage.

Making the light sheet for my piece was hard because i kept having to remember that these were plans for people who had never seen our show so i had to make it as clear as possible but explaining it wasn't hard.

Working in the set team meant we had choose what we wanted on stage. We decided upon some; flower pots, flower tools, a cash machine ad some rubbish for the Winos'.
But this wasn't enough so we took some time after college to add additional signs or to collect additional props such as news papers.

Units 5 and 6 – Final Evaluation Questions
Little Shop of Horrors
  1. Describe the project you have worked on over the term. What was the brief, its starting point and objective? What challenges did you foresee?
Over the term we have worked on the first 15 minutes in little shop of horrors so Act 1, Scene 1, Prologue. We didn’t face to many challenges such as choosing the cast but our challenge was mainly sorting out the choreography and prep because it was our own responsibility.

  1. How did you begin working on your ideas and who did you work with? What research did you look at and how did you use it to create your choreography and plot your scene?
To being we were paired up and was told to choreograph a dance to the songs given. As everyone was paired up I chose to work with Bethany but cause to her absence I had to work mostly by myself.
However, working by myself also worked to my advantage but I did face challenges along the way. To being this I had listen to the song repeatedly to make sure I knew the song well, to be able to choreograph well. Then I laid out a plan on the ground and scribbles outlines of the stage and symbols of the characters, then drew out lines of where they were going through the song.
Another thing I did was look at the lyrics to see who was singing what line and how that line could’ve impacted the choreography.

Lastly once I felt that all my ideas were out on the table I looked to past performances of “skid row” on YouTube for some visual Ideas.

  1. What kind of planning and additional research did you need to do to support development of this piece of work? What did you have to consider- for example; contextual background, breaking down and adaptation of choreography, appropriate dance and acting styles, adapting and learning of script, character research, songs/ music, production elements such as lights, set, costumes etc. How did you go about this?
I did research but I didn’t take that research into my choreography because required less dance and more characterisation which is probably why It was challenging for me because I had considered everyone’s character which distracted me from mine.
However, this worked to my advantage because it meant that I knew what everyone had to be doing and that I knew where to put the spot light I wanted.

  1. What were your individual responsibilities over the course of rehearsal and development and how did you fulfil them?

My responsibilities’ were making sure I was confident in everything I was showing my peers so that they knew if they weren’t sure of the choreography they could ask. Others were making sure the light heighted the highlights of the song and making sure it was entertaining.

  1. How did you work with your group and in solving problems as they arose during the process? Give specific examples of development and/or production problems and difficulties that you came across and discuss how you organised and planned solutions in order to move forward. How well did your solutions work?
Problems definitely occurred considering that there was no main guidance everything was our creation so………. One of the problems we faced was stage direction and organisation. Which is two of the main things in choreography. This happened during rehearsal for “Da Doo” where one of our movements meant that we had to go in front of the people singing but to resolve this problem we decided that some changes were okay

  1. How effectively did you apply your practical and performance skills in rehearsal, development and refinement of the project?
Throughout the project I kept in charge and new what I wanted to deliver to the class.

  1. How successfully do think your performancemet the demands of the scenes/ sections you performed? -How would you evaluate the quality of the final stage performance and the use of your performing skills within the final work, particularly in communicating your piece to an audience?
Honestly I felt that I executed my character very well and felt confident throughout the show, which was shocking to me because in my past shows I've always felt un sure or a little under rehearsed making me more nervous so I hope in my future works i can apply the same energy.

  1. What do you think you have learned about developing work for stage performance? What might you do differently next time? How could the work be improved both personally and in your group in terms of the collaboration process, planning and organisation and performance skills?

Well I learned that it takes a lot of time to plan however when your time is limited it's better to be already have an idea and be think of new solutions quickly when something unexpected happens.
Personally I think it's improved my independent skills and confident skills. I now realise doesn't just need to be in your performance but in your rehearsals too.
Evaluation of other performance pieces.
(Adam’s Family, songs and classworknot necessarily performed)

  • What other repertory pieces have you worked on this term and what practical knowledge and skills did you use and develop as part of these projects?
Other pieces we worked on was the Adam's family musical piece to the song "when your an Adams" however we realised that the 2nd years would be of use in this project the main dancing was made for the (summoned family members) ensemble
In this dance the challenge was just keeping in character the whole time but it was the charters we make for our selves

  • What kind of planning and additional research did you need to do to support development of the pieces?

Because our roles were more created by our imagination i didn't feel I needed to much research however I did watch a previous performance of this song on YouTube to see the standard we had to reach.

  • What had to be taken into account in deciding production elements of the different pieces? Consider lighting to create mood, atmosphere and context, music, costume set etc. How successfully do think these elements met the demands of the pieces you performed?

I think that my performance was well shown because I made sure I stayed in character remember the routine comfortably.
